I am the Commission: Migdalia Frasqueri and her connection with people
regardless their HIV status or sexual orientation.
Migdalia Frasqueri is the office manager in charge of the back end
operations of the Commission. Her last name might sound Italian but she is
as Latina as the Goya products. Her parents are Puerto Rican and she was
born in New York City. She sure comes from a big family: 4 older brothers
and 4 sisters, and 2 sons. Migdalia loves music, reading, riding bike,
baseball and just being with family and friends.
Through you job, you have met many people who are HIV positive. What can you
say about them?
People I have met while working at the Commission are incredible; they are
strong, open-minded and have a lot of knowledge of their illness. They always bring a smile to my face and I like to laugh with them.
As a Latina women and the mother of 2 young men, what will you tell to other
Latinas about HIV/AIDS?
I would tell other women to speak to their kids as much as they can about
sex, and all diseases out there, because it's not just AIDS they need to worry about. Make sure they educate themselves as well as their kids about
the disease, as few people have good knowledge on how you could get it. Some people are naïve and think the worst about people who have it.
Do you ever talk about sex education to your sons? Did you ever give them
condoms?
My husband and I always talk to our kids about sex and YES I do give them condoms, all the time. We believe that sex education starts from home.
You are a straight ally to the members of the LGBT community. Did you become one while working at the Commission or you were an ally before that?
I have been this way since young. I have a lot of family and friends who are gay and have some that have passed away from AIDS. We are all the same
in God's eyes.
As the personal assistance to Dennis deLeon, what memories do you have of him? Was he an easy boss to work with?
Wow, I have so many memories of Dennis deLeon; he was a great, smart, strong man. He has devoted his life to work for the human rights of the Latino community and the people living with HIV. His legacy will live on forever. He will forever be in our hearts!
